Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Massage

The temporomandibular joint consists of two joints that connect the mandible (jaw bone) to your skull at the temporal bone.  Dysfunction in this joint and the surrounding musculature can be a source of pain and discomfort resulting in symptoms such as;

  • Jaw pain
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw
  • Headaches or ear pain
  • Pain or difficulty with chewing and/or opening of the mouth
  • Neck or shoulder pain linked to tension in the jaw
  • Somatosensory tinnitus (of neck or jaw origin)

TMJ massage, offered by Jennifer Ingram RMT, can be an effective treatment to reduce and relieve the symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and/or temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD). Treatment of the TMJ focuses on relieving tension and dysfunction in the muscles of the jaw, head, neck and shoulders.

Techniques used in treatment of TMD/TMJD can include;

  • Massage of the head, neck, and shoulders
  • Intra-oral massage*
  • Stretching
  • Joint mobilizations

*Intra-oral massage can be used effectively and should feel therapeutic and safe, without causing pain.
